Small business focus: Plantagenet Rose

.
I have been friends with the owner of Plantagenet Rose for a few years now. How did we meet? During a discussion on Facebook about Roanoke’s art museum. Over the years, I have met many people through Facebook or other social media sites. I have been on the internet since 1992 and never looked back. So, I don’t think anything of meeting people and developing more personal relationships off the social media sites. I consider it a part of growing a network. At any rate…
Plantagenet Rose is located on 16 South College St., in Salem, VA, it is just right off of Main St. Gwenda is a decorator and businesswoman by trade and her shop reflects some of her, and more importantly, her clients favorite things. It is a gift boutique and design center. With gorgeous items for the home, such as vases, decoratives, candles, original artwork, floral arrangements, etc. There is a room that is her design center for curtains, bedding, and blinds. The store also boasts pretty things for yourself such as purses, scarves, and unusual jewelry. The items that she carries cannot be found anywhere else! So why are you shopping in big department stores for the holidays? Check them out!

Thanksgiving Table

Decorating Blog from P R Interiors

You all know I love Table settings and this table is so pretty. Brought to us by the Blog Simplified Bee – Lots of lovely ideas here.

Although this tablescape is very warm and loving, I do have a few of minor grips.

The credit

I love the plates but if you haven’t inherited them, I do not want you to go out and buy them for one meal, there are many other ways to make a solid colored plate work. It is not just the cost, but the storage, we need to put away and remember where they are in time for next year. Major hassle at a busy time.

The second thing is the wine glasses they have nuts in them, these would need to be removed if you are to use the glasses. Questions: are the nuts washed and where do we put them when they are tossed out of the wine glass and can we eat them, where are the nutcrackers? I could go on…

The third thing is Candles. I love candles. In this setting the votives are unnecessary and take up space that should be reserved for food. I also think they are a fire hazard, very easy to set fire to a loose sleeve at this height. Also, it should be pointed out that it is never a good idea to have scented candles on a dining table, we want to smell the food, not the candles. The hurricanes are beautiful, but take up a lot of space. It perffectly fine to have some decorative things on the table during appetizers as long as they can be remove quickly and without disruption. These are a complex arrangements that would have to be lifted away in three of four moves each.

The Thanksgiving table needs to have a lots of room for food, the sharing and passing of it. So, ditch the clutter and embrace the turkey. That’s why we are here. Family, Love and Plenty. The food should smell good, taste good and look good. If you have that you are good to go.

Often times a table like this is done to show the decorators skill and it is beautiful and on the surface practical, but on closer analysis it is not.

Sorry folks, but an overdecorated table is usually very inefficient.

This table is a table in waiting from www.inspirehomemagazine.com

Welcome to the Dark Forest

Do you love Halloween?  Have you ever wished you could create a haunted house in your own back yard?  Well Brandon Roth did just that!  I first heard about him through my friend and his neighbor.  We drove by his house one afternoon and the giant hand was pretty well put together sitting directly in his front yard.  I was intrigued so I looked him up online and discovered that Brandon has a dream to become a special effects artist and go to college for it.  This school is pretty expensive but he is determined to make it happen…so every year he puts together a haunted house it his parents back yard.  How cool is that!!!  I was nervous when I arrived.  I drug my friend Tony along for support (yes I am a huge haunted house chicken).  After introducing myself I was relieved when Brandon’s mom offered that I take a Non-scare/private tour so I could take photos without being scared.  Since taking photos was my main purpose to be there I was all in!  Plus I would hate for an actor to jump out to scare me only for me to flash them with my camera.  He had a great setup.  Small paths to walk through, scary corners, great actors, and good lighting.  He still managed to scare me a few times while I was there.  I seriously recommend that everyone go next year!   I may have taken the kid version; however, I can tell it was pretty scary!
